The beautiful Alley of lovers leads to the city stadium from here. Travelers in Stepanakert have the opportunity to settle in one of five local hotels. As a settlement the city was formed at the beginning of the 19th century, on the site of the village Vararakn, which is located on the present territory of the city. The city is located on the eastern slope of the Artsakh mountain range, on the left bank of the Vararakn River (the tributary of the Karkar River), on 850 m above sea level. The first plan for designing and building the city of Stepanakert was developed by Alexander Tamanyan (1926), the second - Slobotianik (1938), the third - B. Dadashyan (1968). However, the architects adhered to Tamanian's project.

Stepanakert Armenian State Dramatic Theater named after V. Papazyan plays an invaluable role in the cultural life of Artsakh. The theater was founded in 1932. It is worth remembering that during the years, when the territory was governed by Azerbaijan, plays on the history of the Armenian nation were almost completely excluded from the list of the only state dramatic theater in the Armenian region. Even the word "Armenian" was removed from the signboard of the theater.
